An attempt at Kannada Translation of Robert Frost's poem Devotion: ಅನುರಾಗ ಪುನರಾವರ್ತನೆಯನ್ನೆಣಿಸುತ್ತಲನವರತ ತಡಿಯ ಕೋರೆಗೆ ನೆಲೆ ನಿಂತು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುತ ಕಡಲಿನೊಡಲಿಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದ ತೀರದಂತಿರುವಾಗ ಮನಸ್ಸೆಣಿಸಲಾರದು ಇದನುಳಿದ ಅನುರಾಗ The original: " Devoton" by Robert Frost: The heart can think of no devotion Greater than being shore to the ocean-- Holding the curve of one position, Counting an endless repetition.

An attempt at translating Dr. Chandana Sri 's poem "Cerebral Palsy" to Kannada, one of the most beautiful and moving poems I have come across in recent times. The original is below the translation, and I would be very surprised if the last four lines of the original in particular did not move many people to tears or make them contemplate in general. Dr. Chandana says she wrote this poem about 4 years ago, when a kid with cerebral palsy had come in with pneumonia for treatment. ಸೆರೆಬ್ರಲ್ ಪಾಲ್ಸಿ ಮರಮರಳಿ ನನ್ನತ್ತ ನೀ ನೋಡಿದಾಗೆಲ್ಲ ಮರೆಯಾಗಲಿನ್ನೆಂದು ಬಯಸಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ನಿನ್ನ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಬೇರಿನ್ನೇನು? ಎಡಬಿಡದೆ ಕಾಡುತಿಹ ದಿಗಿಲಲ್ಲವೇ? ಬಲಹೀನನಿವ ತನ್ನ ಅಡಗಿನುಂಡೆಯೆ ಕಾಣು ಮೂಕನಿವ ಹೆಡ್ಡನಿವನೆನಿಸಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಮರುಕವಿಲ್ಲದ ವಿಧಿಯು ತಿರುಚಿರಲು ನನ್ನಿರವ ಬೆಲೆಯೇನು ಇವನದೆಂದೆನಿಸಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ನನ್ನೆಡೆಗೆ ನೋಡಿ ನೀ ನಗುವೆಯಾ, ಈ ನನ್ನ ನವಿರಿರದ ನಡೆಗಳನು ಅಣಕಿಸುವೆಯಾ? ನನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ಉರಿಯುತಿಹ ಚೈತನ್ಯದಗ್ನಿಯನು ನೋಡುವಾಸೆಗೂ ನೆಲೆಯ ಕೊಡದಾದೆಯಾ? ನನ್ನಿಂದ ನೀ ಪಡೆದ ನಲಿವುಗಳ ಸಮನಾದ ಒಲವ ನೀ ನನಗೆಂದು ಕೊಡಮಾಡೆಯಾ? ಹೇಗಿರಲುಬಹುದಿತ್ತು ...

Translation of Dr. Chandana Sri's poem "Wounded Healers" in Kannada. ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ದಿ ಅರುಣ್ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಶೋ  ಎರಡನೇ ಆವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ನನಗೂ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಲು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಾತೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದಿನಗಳು ನೆನಪಾದವು. The Arun Meshtru Show S1-E2 ದಿ ಅರುಣ್ ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಶೋ S1-E2 Feat. @arunmeshtru Like | Share | Subscribe https://t.co/pdRGVzCfiT pic.twitter.com/Wj7RNRPoqx — Talk Of The Town (@TalkOf_TheT0wn) July 26, 2019 ನಾನು ಇದ್ದದ್ದು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಊರು. ಹಾಸನ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಚನ್ನರಾಯಪಟ್ಟಣ . ಈಗ ಊರು ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರೂ ನನ್ನ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಊರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನನ್ನ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ವರವಾಗಿದ್ದಂತಹವು ಊರಿನ "ಜಯಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ಸರ್ಕ್ಯುಲೇಟಿಂಗ್ ಲೈಬ್ರರಿ" ಎಂಬ ಒಂದು ಖಾಸಗಿ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯ . ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎರವಲು ತಂದು ಓದಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲ. ನನಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯವಾದದ್ದು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅಮರ ಚಿತ್ರ ಕಥೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಂದ. ನಮ್ಮ ತಂದೆಯವರು, ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪ ಆಗಾಗ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು. ಅವು ಕೇವಲ ಕಾಮಿಕ್ಸ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವುಗಳಿಂದ ಕಲಿತದ್ದು ಬಹಳ. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದ ಮೂಲೆ ಮೂಲೆಗಳಿಂದ ಪುರಾಣ ಮತ್ತು ನೀತಿಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಕ್ಕಿ ತಂದು ಮನಮುಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ಕಲಿಸಿದ ಶ್ರೇಯ ಅಮರ ಚಿತ್ರ ಕಥೆ ಮ...

Thanks to the requests of the multi-talented Dr. Chandana Sri over at Twitter, I took up the challenge of translating William Shakespeare's Sonnet 94 to Kannada. This is an intriguing and enigmatic sonnet with multiple interpretations discussed by many scholars, so I'm not going into the details of those interpretations with no scholarly background for the same. Here's the attempt to translate it to Kannada though, where attempts to stick to its original rhyming scheme had to be given up mostly, and also my initial thoughts of ensuring dwitIyAkShara prAsa in Kannada had to be set aside too, while only ensuring it for lines 9-14. The whole write up is in the form 5/5/5/3, so that it could match the last line that was already translated by Dr. Chandana as "ಕೊಳೆತ ನೈದಿಲೆ ನಾತ ಕಳೆಗಿಂತ ಕೀಳು" So, in essence, it was an exercise in samasyApUraNa! ನೋಯಿಸುವ ಬಲವಿದ್ದು ನೋಯಿಸದ ಜನರು ಗೋಚರಿಪ ಲಕ್ಷಣವ ದಿಟ ಮಾಡದವರು ಇತರರಂ ಕದಲಿಪರು ತಾವು ಕಲ್ಲಾಗಿ ಜಡವಾಗಿ, ಸೆಟೆದಿರ್ದು, ಸೆಳೆತ...

ಇಂದಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ೨೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ನಿಂತುಹೋದದ್ದೊಂದು ಖಯಾಲಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೇಕೆ ಆರಂಭಿಸಬಾರದೆಂಬ ಮನಸ್ಸು ನನಗೂ ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಶಿವಪ್ರಸಾದನಿಗೂ ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಿಗಿನ ಜಾವದ ನಡಿಗೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೇ ಬಂದದ್ದು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯಕರವೇ. ೧೪ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ ೧೯೯೯ ರ ದಿನ ನಾವಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಕೈಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕೈಬರಹ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ " ಜ್ಞಾನಲೋಕ "ದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪ್ರತಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಗೊಂಡ ದಿನ. ಅಂದು ಅಂಬೇಡ್ಕರ್ ಜಯಂತಿಯೆಂದು ಶಿವಪ್ರಸಾದನು ಅಂಬೇಡ್ಕರರ ಚಿತ್ರವೊಂದನ್ನೂ ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಒಂದೇ ಹಾಳೆಯ ಪೇಪರನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿಯೇ ತುಂಬಿಸಿದ್ದ. ಆ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಅಂದು ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರತರುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆವು. ಒಂದು ದಿನ ನಾನು ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಬರೆದರೆ ಮಾರನೆಯ ದಿನ ಅವನು. ಅದರ ನಂತರ ಮತ್ತೆ ನಾನು. ಹಾಗೆ. ಯಾರು ಬರೆದರೂ ಕೆಳಗೊಂದು ಕಾರ್ಬನ್ ಶೀಟ್ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಬರೆಯುವುದು. ಅದೇ ಎರಡನೇ ಪ್ರತಿ. ನಾನು ಬರೆದ ದಿನ ಆ ಕಾರ್ಬನ್ ಕಾಪಿ ಪ್ರತಿಯನ್ನು ಶಿವಪ್ರಸಾದನಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುವುದು, ಅವನು ಬರೆದ ದಿನ ಅವನು ನನಗೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಅಷ್ಟೇ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೇ ಒಂದು ಸಂತೃಪ್ತಿ. ಯಾರಿಗೇನು ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ಹೇಳಿಯೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.    ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಕೊಡುವುದು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಓದುಗರು ನಾವೇನೋ ಆ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಡೆಸಿದೆವೆಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ನಾವು ಹೊರತಂದದ್ದು ಕೇವಲ ಐದೋ ಆರೋ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು! ನಮ್ಮಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಆಗ...
