Leave them alone, they know what they're doing!

Leave them alone, they know what they're doing! Such people do exist, you may not believe it! Going about their business, never do they quit. Giving it their all - no swagger, no fearing, Even when nobody is watching or cheering. At the top of their game, leading the pack, Calm and collected, they put in their best. When grave adversities pull them right back, Determined they march, to get through the test. They might be young, with no formal training, Dogged and ruthless, they go about learning. With all those skills, years down the line, They keep getting better, like an old wine. When all around them are mighty amazed, They strive for that excellence, all but unfazed. Appearing cool, like an iceberg outside, Desire to succeed burning bright inside. They may not fit in, they may not stand out. They carry on with their life, no doubt. When the going gets tough, the tough get going! Leave them alone, they know what they're doing!

Poem on "The Doctor" and its translation

Image
Earlier this year, on my Twitter timeline, I came across this remarkable painting from the year 1891 , titled “The Doctor” , by Sir Luke Fildes , currently kept on display at the Tate Gallery, London. It was a moving painting, and the first thoughts that occurred to me were about how a poet would interpret it. With that in mind, I requested Dr. Chandana Sri to let her thoughts flow on this one, and sure enough, what came about was a beautiful moving poem. Later on, I ended up translating it to Kannada too. Those two poems are featured below:   The poem Dr. Chandana wrote with that painting as the subject:   For the want of but one meagre cot On a makeshift bed of rags and chairs Motionless she lies, the tiny tot 'neath the table-lamp's lopsided gaze   Hearing not her mommy's muffled cries Smelling not the porridge in the urns Seeing not her daddy's watchful eyes Crestfallen and stoic all at once   Like her pillow- squalid, limp and pale Holding out to him, her little...

Over the last couple of months, Dr. Chandana Sri and I took up this near-impossible task of translating Sri Dakshinamurti Ashtaka Stotra of Sri Adi Shankaracharya to Kannada. While the outcome is that of an attempt by beginners (trying to put across the translation in Bhamini Shatpadi while the original is in Shardula Vikridita chhandas), we could at least feel good about completing the task, and having learnt a lot through the process. ( EDIT : We have updated this with supportive and educative inputs from Dr. Shrikaanth K Murthy and Sri H S Raghavendra ) Here is our attempt, also adorned with a spectacular painting of Sri Dakshinamurti by Dr. Chandana Sri !

Recently, I came across this poem that happens to be the secret song (forced by Hobbes, of course) to get access to the headquarters of the club G.R.O.S.S, in Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes: Tigers are mean Tigers are fierce Tigers have teeth And claws that pierce. Tigers are great They can't be beat If I was a tiger That would be neat! Tigers are nimble And light on their toes My Respect for tigers Continually grows. Tigers are perfect The e-pit-o-me Of good looks and grace And quiet dignity! Tigers are great They're the toast of town Life's always better When a tiger's around!   So, here's my attempt to translate this into Kannada in Shardula Vikridita Chhandas. 20 lines become 12, so I have split them into 2 verses of 6 lines each, depending on where there is a meaningful pause in the original. Surely, Shardula Vikridita is the most fitting meter for Calvin and Hobbes?!

Here's an attempt at translating another of Bill Watterson 's poems that appeared in Calvin and Hobbes, where Calvin hilariously thinks that his parents, alien beings in disguise according to him, are hatching a sinister plan to enslave him. The translation follows a maatraa chhandas of 3/3/3/3/3/3/4:
