The original by Prof. M. Hiriyanna:

Thoughts on a Birthday

My path - alas! how painful is its thought! -
Had not a single spring or place of shade
Wherein my soul in gladness could be laid,
Be freed from what on it had evil wrought.
Thus all the way, one lesson I was taught -
The one I know - that I was made to fade.
But still, tho' tired, I walked for still I had
A comfort in a loving guide that sought
To lead me. Now, that lost, I too much feel
The burden of my life. No more I fain
Would walk - so much my head doth seem to reel -
But walk I must. So let me start again,
Walk till my duty is done; for to steal
From Duty's to make way for greater pain.
